Aiming a hit at the NY Times Bestseller List

Welcome to the eBook marketing training camp.
Here you can watch an unknown indie authour drop her pants while she markets her book. The aim can't be higher: The New York Times Bestseller List.

WTF?
I want to encourage unpublished writers to self-publish and reach for the seemingly impossible. This is a marketing experiment, showing how far an unknown author could get by kicking his/her own butt and giving it all. There are a few obstacles, though: this book is not a romance, nor BDSM erotica, nor does it include werewolves or vampires. If you think including Sherlock Holmes in a novel helps to sell it, I suggest you take a look at the sales ranks of other SH books (it doesn't help).

Background:
The Devil's Grin, a Victorian crime novel, published September 2012 through Amazon KDP. Four months of marketing trial-and-error and data analysis (I'm a scientist so data are sexy, analyzing them even more so). Ebooks of different authors, various genres, various sales ranks have been analyzed as well.

Results so far:
The Devil's Grin spend several weeks on the Amazon (US) British Mystery Detective Top10 and by now 20,000 people have the book on their kindles, more than 20 torrent (piracy) websites have it and another handful of "file-sharing" sites.

Budget:
Started with NIL. By the end of February, half of what the book earned so far, will be spent on marketing.

Aiming the marketeer musket:
No need to tell me I'm nuts. I know its VERY unlikely to land a NY Times Bestseller. Nonetheless, musket is loaded and ready to shoot. Several marketing tools are scheduled:
(A) Last branding efforts during the first 3 weeks of February (sales rank wise, nothing much should happen)
(B) Four large campains during the last week of February (this is when the book should hit the top ranks)

What you can do (there are only two options):
(A) Lean back and watch me eat dirt.
(B) Help me spread the word. Share this post, "like" The Devil's Grin Facebook page, maybe even buy it if you like. But PLEASE DON'T BUY before the last week of February (it will be at 0.99$ then).

Indie Authors:
You want to pick my brain? Fine with me. I'll post all data on my marketing efforts when this ordeal is over (beginning of March).

LAST UPDATE 02/17; 9:30pm (Berlin Time)

First campaing: 31/01
Small (branding) campaings: 02/01 through 02/12

  1. Looks like my latest EKG.

Flat-lined (Blue) at releasing your 'Grin'.

Flat-lined again (Green) at high point of sales.

Heavy drinking (Red wine) when sales dropped.

Suggestions for joining 'N.Y. TIMES' best seller's list:

    1) Buy an airplane, paint a grinning raven on the cockpit and fly around Manhattan 'til the cows come home.

    2) Find my Onkel Horst, he was a great 'Puppenmacher' known for 'Barbie & Ken'. (Kronberg u. Pleasure)

    3) A musket? Marketing is war! All is fair in any war! The louder 'The Bomb' the better the effect.

    4) Slap a picture of 'The Grin' on the ass end of every NYC bus, Subway & Metropolitan Transit Train.
